My poster for the Haiti Poster Project, along with hundreds of others, went up for sale today. There are some seriously awesome posters by some seriously talented people up for sale, and everything starts at just $25, so check it out, furnish your living quarters with some sweet posters, and help those who could really use it all at the same time!
Oh, how I have neglected you, Mr. Blog! I have a lot of work that hasn’t been documented or is currently in progress, a new site planned for the beginning of the summer (tardy, I know), as well as some exciting news to announce: I will be apprenticing with Jim Croft, my far-and-away favorite practicing book artist, this summer in Idaho for a whole month! I expect to learn a bunch of new things and make some cool stuff, and I’ll be sure to share it with you all. I apologize for the lack of updates as of late, please stay tuned!
Now, in actually important news, I am proud to announce my participation in the Haiti Poster Project.

I have designed the above poster, which was screen printed by The Half and Half, and donated a signed edition of 50 to the project. They go on sale in two weeks, at $25 a piece, and all of the profits will go to Doctors Without Borders. This also marks the first time anything I have designed solo will be sold; exciting stuff!

Today, I had the pleasure of taking a tour of Globe with my letterpress class. I of course forgot my camera on said life-changing tour, but luckily the amazing Becky Slogeris had her’s and was snapping away.
I was absolutely in awe of the equipment, tools, wood type and presses in the Globe shop. It was humbling to see the workspace of such authentic craftsmen, and very sad to see it so dusty and unused. In its prime, Globe was a premier provider of show and carnival posters, among other things. They have an enormous collection of wood type, one-of-a-kind etchings and wood cuts, not to mention a prestigious portfolio of work. Globe is a family run business, and unfortunately doesn’t have the money to get their huge poster presses running again just yet. They do sell stunning screen-printed re-issues of their classic posters, and they are available here: Globe Poster Classics
The posters are cheap, beautifully printed, unique and supporting an incredible business that has sadly fallen off the map in many ways. Holidays are approaching, I’m just sayyyiinnnn’. (so is Becky)

I will be making a poster for MICA‘s screening of Gary Hustwitt’s new film, “Objectified“, and I was inspired by this quote from Mr. Hustwitt…
On an average day, each of us uses hundreds of objects. (Don’t believe it? Start counting: alarm clock, light switch, faucet, shampoo bottle, toothbrush, razor…) Who makes all these things, and why do they look and feel the way they do? All of these objects are “designed,” but how can good design make them, and our lives, better?
… so I decided that for my poster I would track all of the objects I use in a single day. This is pretty much everything I touch or use, excluding food, architecture, and mother earth. I know the evening is young, but here is the list I have compiled:

Had this bouncing around my head for some time and threw it together. I think it, or something similar would make a fine screen print. Thoughts?

You’ll notice with a little sleuthing that I haven’t posted any work from my Type 2 class this semester. Perhaps it’s having Type 1 with Ellen Lupton, or perhaps it’s the remedial curriculum, but something has made the class a chore for me, and I do not like any of the assignments or work I am doing for them. Nevertheless, I figured I would post our most recent project. The content is a fictitious event and bad joke (perhaps you’re beginning to see why the class is not my favorite) with some famous designers, most of whom my instructor misspelled. The above solution will be my final, below are some other ideas. (more…)

Poster for Thievery Corporation at Rams Head Live this upcoming Friday. I decided, as I tend to, that even though I have no experience screen printing on my own and this is my first print in more than one color, that I would try and screen print an edition of these. The results were expensive and disappointing. I got a few prints where the distressed/grunge look is actually kind of cool, but on most of the 25 its just really sad and unfortunate.
