Pompadour Available as a Font (still free!)

Thanks to the wonderful Johno of I Love Typography, and the magic of the Creative Commons, the Pompadour numeral set is now available as both TrueType and OpenType fonts. I figured if John was going to go through the trouble of making Pompadour into a working font, the least I could do was add some punctuation. You’ll find a full stop, semi-colon, colon, comma, hyphen, en-dash and em-dash enclosed, all designed to work with those chunky-ass numbers. Enjoy!

It’s also worth noting that a man named Tom generously made a different set of font files for Pompadour, with a square full stop. Head on over to his blog if you get your jollies from that sort of thing.

Pompadour Numeral Set (Free Download)

I have finally gotten around to wrapping up the numeral set I finished a year ago into a nice, downloadable .eps to share with the internet. I hereby dub it ‘Pompadour.’ I have licensed it under the Creative Commons, so feel free to download, use, modify, and share the numbers as you see fit, just please give props where props are due. If you end up using the numbers on something, shoot me a jpg and I’ll link you up on this post.

Thrift Store Sign Delivered!

I have some good news! I have finally delivered my large painted sign to the owners of the thrift store that suffered severe fire damage this past spring. They were very grateful to have the sign and are hoping to reopen their doors soon, though they’re not sure exactly when. Hopefully, they’ll get things up and running this fall.

The Action Upscale Cultural Community Thrift Store: Philanthropic Design Fail

This past semester I was really digging on my lettering course, but also feeling compelled to connect more directly with my community, and maybe even help somebody with my work. So, for my final, I decided to try and unite my aesthetic, passionate interest in lettering with philanthropy and community focused design. I set out to create an old-fashioned hand painted sign, for one of the many well meaning organizations in Baltimore with less than wonderful signage. After some research, I decided on “The Action Upscale Cultural Community Thrift Store,” a secondhand store nearby my apartment, run by volunteers, that puts on programs for “women, youth, young adults, and the elderly”.

Make Something Cool Everyday

Make Something Cool Every Day

My most tangible new years resolution is to begin participating in the “Make Something Cool Every Day” project, wherein I will make something — cool — everyday. The idea is to give myself a break from all manner of projects for 30 minutes to an hour everyday and just make something. I expect to do a lot of lettering (quick sketches turned quickly digital) and hopefully some random editorialey illustrations.

I will be posting these on the internet, and I expect you people to hold me to my resolution.

Cyrillic Fat Script Updated

I got lots of feedback on the “Fat Script: An Exploration in Cyrillic and Latin Script” post from yesterday concerning the legibility of my Cyrillic. (Special thanks to Robin, Colin, Alexey, Ken, and the internet) Hence, I have updated the script to hopefully be more legible. The old is on top and the new is on the bottom; let me know!

Fat Script: An Exploration in Cyrillic and Latin Script

We are experimenting with Cyrillic in my lettering class with Ken Barber of House Industries this week. We have to make a bilingual hang tag for some manner of plush toy in the spirit of Moomins, Cheburashka, etc. I decided after some sketching to try and handle both the latin and the cyrillic in some super-fat(phat) script lettering reminiscent of a chunky shoelace or some squeezed out toothpaste.

Laser Etched Letterpress Block Printing, Soup to Nuts, in One Day

Soooooooooo for my Experimental Lettering course we had to expand on our monogram/cipher sketches from last week and apply the finalized design to some medium. I chose to create a letterpress wood block I can use on any typesetting things I tackle in the future. So, I got up real early on Saturday, went down to the wood shop, cut a piece of wood to the perfect size, went over to the lasercutter/etcher and waited my turn in line, and etched the design into the end grain of the block. The result was this:

Some sketchbook scans of my brainstorming and sketching for my personal monogram/cipher for Ken Barber. Some more cleaned up versions to come soon. (more…)

Developed Lettering: Teaberry

I have been working on further developing the “grocery store” lettering from my first assignment in Ken Barber’s class, and here is where it has gotten me. Though it is in its infancy and I doubt I will ever get around to turning this into an actual font, I have started affectionately calling this face “Teaberry” after one of my favorite old-school chewing gum brands.

Please let me know what you think thus-far!
