Fine Artist Dai Foldes has finally got himself an online presence. He is a good friend and roommate of mine who manages to survive in an apartment full of designers and nerds. Few people I know dedicate as much time and thought to their work as Dai; most every piece is imbued with authentic meaning. His “Whale vs. Squid” series is my personal favorite. (more…)

I updated my portfolio tonight with some older work. Some of it is “Fine Art” which I choose to keep intermingled with my design work. Though drawing is not what I am pursuing in my professional life, it is still important to me and can shed more light on my design work.

Latest life drawing assignment, I don’t think its quite done yet (the legs).

Sanguine and White Conte on Cream Marillo, 40x28
Latest work for Phil; the assignment was to put six legs in one frame and I decided to use our old, saggy, disgusting couch as the frame. I focused a lot on the tonal range in this one, and I think its a lot better than in my previous pieces, although still a bit too high contrast overall.
The couch is my favorite part.

Sanguine Conte on Ingres, 40x28
In light of my tonal short-comings on last weeks drawing home studio work, I chose to use a lighter conte for this piece to try and focus on the mid-tones. I tried to make what was a very straightforward assignment a little more interesting with the composition, though I am not sure how successful I think I was quite yet.
I love the lightswitch and the delicate, organic tones on the wall around it. “Sassypposto,” its like contrapposto but way sassier.

"Portraits by Clutter" displayed in MICA's Meyerhoff Gallery
I was fortunate enough to have my triptych “Potraits by Clutter” chosen for the Maryland Institute College of Art Foundation Exhibition, a selection of works from the foundation program for first year students. This piece was created under the fabulous instruction of Fabienne Lasserre in her Drawing II class.
Check out the rest of the fantastic Foundation Exhibition at MICA if you are in or around Baltimore!
