Press Name

Laurie Snyder, professor of my Artist’s Books class, has encouraged us to create a “press name”, basically a pseudonym we put on each of our pieces. I think I am going to use this as an opportunity to make a stamp, something which I have wanted to do for awhile now. I had a little fun playing with my name “Andy” and this beautiful Baskerville italic ampersand. I think this thing is totally ridiculous and silly, but an elegant form nonetheless. It will make a nice, semi-anonymous sign off to each of my books I think.

I like it! Do you read the ampersand blog? http://ampersand.gosedesign.net/
I do and its oh so very good. I am actually at this very moment working on a book devoted to the ampersand. (Typical GD student project, I know, but I don’t care)
I love how elegant it is, yet, when you think about it, it’s no less dumb than “B&” or any other ampersand pun.
Something here really appeals to me. Is it the stark delineation between style and substance?
It’s analogous to a silly joke. Silly jokes are funny and enjoyable, even though when you think about them they’re just random and stupid. This stamp is elegant, beautiful, respectable and enjoyable, even thought (when you think about it) it’s just a silly way of writing “and-y, Andy, AND-Y, geddit, har har har XD”
