My Tools
This is my latest project for my Artist’s Books class. The assignment was to bind together atleast 8 of something at a single point. Usually, this style of binding ends up functioning like a booklet of paint swatches, fanning out to be read. My book is all about the tools I use to create; it is both a reaction to my being the only male in my book arts class and people who assume design is synonymous with digital.
It is made from a 5″ x 24″ x .25″ piece of flamed maple I have had laying around ever since I made my Biography book at the very end of last year. I laser cut some vector illustration I did of the tools into the wood, then cut it down, sanded it, and drilled it in the shop. Finally, I bound it all with a padlock, because I want to protect my craft from the onset of the digital age.

The wood and laser burning are absolutely beautiful.I find it a little ironic that you’re trying to make it not digital but the type and images and even the process in which they were transferred to the wood are all very much digital. Just an observation, it’s still a great work, and the photos don’t even do justice to the wood.
I agree, it’s incredibly well executed but it could be a thousand times better without the digital type.
Its the irony that makes this artwork what it is.
