A series of two type specimen books for the typeface Clarendon. The content is written by me and the covers are made from Cocobolo and Bloodwood samples I bought online, joined, and laser etched.
5.5" x 4.25" x .75"; printed on tan Rives; coptic bound with waxed linen thread.

Really beautiful. And powerful. As much as I appreciate the very nice type work and the construction, I was more taken by the thoughts expressed. You might append your bio — /philosopher.
Beautiful books as always. I love how the covers came out on these.
@Wrath – I am glad you enjoyed reading the content, I had a good time writing it as well. It was an interesting exercise in introspection, trying to figure out how to put things about myself I have always taken for granted into words.
Beautifull Book!!!
Thanks
Pilar
At the risk of asking you a question you probably get all the time… are these for sale? They’re beautiful.
Thanks Elliot, they are unfortunately not for sale. I am holding onto the Cocobolo (darker) one and the Bloodwood (lighter) one I gave to Ellen Lupton.
Really good stuff!
I’m sad to hear that, Andy, but of course I completely understand! And wow, if anyone deserves one, it’s Ellen Lupton! :)
Muy bueno tu trabajo, quedo increíble felicitaciones.
cool^^
Great job !! You seem to like the Clarendon typeface as much as I do ! This makes me think of a nice “book as an item” exercise I did last year in typography course.
Speaking of it, I am currently searching for the original drawings of the Clarendon type – do you know where I could most probably find them ? By Monotype’s perhaps ?
love the books, do you know of any websites or books that explain how to tie books/pages in this style?
@ Sam:
If you just google search Coptic binding you can find a number of websites offering variations on how to create this binding structure.

Hey man I stumbled upon your website through found… your hand made books a sick!!!!! Great craft sir. Well played!
@Dustin: Thank you sir, much appreciated!
yet again very cool, does your brain constantly move at 100 mph?
@lyn: More or less, its got its pros an cons.
Really, really great work. I almost begrudgingly wish this was mass produced.. just so I could own one.. but I’ll settle for appreciating them on here.
I’m glad you put the photos up for us all though, the musings are my favourite aspect – and your ‘hope’ philosophy has become one of my favourite quotes.
@rhys – Thank you very much! Coming up with the musings was one of my favorite bits about this assignment. It is interesting to just sit down and try and put your personal beliefs into concise writing, and especially hard to come up with something even remotely original.
@andy – yeah I totally agree about trying to come up with something profound, concise and original.. so many things have already been said, often by people more lyrically dextrous than myself..
I was just wondering though.. I’ve decided to become a guinea pig for my brother’s tattoo training, so would you mind if I got your ‘hope’ philosophy etched permanently into my skin?
@rhys: I certainly don’t mind, quite flattered actually. If you do end up doing it, please please pleaassseee send me a picture so I can see!
