Books about Books

Please excuse the slacker photos. The assignment was to create a book of book reviews and recommendations by some Graphic Design Majors at MICA. The recommendations were supposed to be creative, anything that could benefit or inspire a designer, but many of them were shallow, obvious, or just blatantly bad books. Hence, the title of the book is “Punk Kids Who Think They Know Shit”. Some of the selections in the book put the title in a quite literal context and make it clear we still have plenty to learn, but the better recommendations flip the relationship and turn the title into satire. Some selected spreads from the 60+ page book below the fold.

  1. I was looking through your book– it’s still on the counter in front of Brockett’s office, btw– and was really impressed with the overall design and binding, not to mention entertained by the concept. But there’s one huge problem with it– the type isn’t perfect. It doesn’t look like you went through the sloppily written reviews everyone turned in and edited them. There are misspellings, unnecessary double spaces, un-italicized book titles (which may or may not have been part of your overall aesthetic), and hyphen/em-dash/en-dash errors. Brockett would be all over you for that. Your book is gorgeous, but it could be perfect if you really paid attention to the accuracy of the type. Not to be a type nazi, but the book was for Type II.

Also, major props to you on the rest of your books. You’ve got excellent craft.

  2. Hey Whitney, the imperfection of the copy is precisely what inspired my concept: the fact that people only had to submit 50 words and very few people were able to do it without screwing up is pretty sad.

I was over there to pick it up a little while ago and it wasn’t there, I guess I will stop by sometime soon though! Thanks!
