Laser Etched Letterpress Block Printing, Soup to Nuts, in One Day

Soooooooooo for my Experimental Lettering course we had to expand on our monogram/cipher sketches from last week and apply the finalized design to some medium. I chose to create a letterpress wood block I can use on any typesetting things I tackle in the future. So, I got up real early on Saturday, went down to the wood shop, cut a piece of wood to the perfect size, went over to the lasercutter/etcher and waited my turn in line, and etched the design into the end grain of the block. Typesetting Introduction

We finally began setting some lead type in my letterpress class, and the experience was tremendously rewarding. Something about the whole process is really giving me a different perspective on design in general; I expect I will take a lot from class. Just during these simple settings I gained a whole new appreciation for the personality and character of Gill Sans, one of my least favorite typefaces. There will definitely be more to come in the letterpress department; we get to start more directly designing things soon.

Developed Lettering: Teaberry

I have been working on further developing the “grocery store” lettering from my first assignment in Ken Barber’s class, and here is where it has gotten me. Though it is in its infancy and I doubt I will ever get around to turning this into an actual font, I have started affectionately calling this face “Teaberry” after one of my favorite old-school chewing gum brands.

Flash AS3 Experimentation

I have begun experimenting with Flash and Actionscript 3, somewhat against my will, in my GD300 class this semester. This is my first real experience with the new program and the third iteration of Actionscript, so I have a lot of learning to do. I will be posting my progress here, thus providing some very, very silly, interactive things for you to play with.

This is also my first shot at embedding flash on my site here, so let me know if anything is wonky or if I should be doing something differently.

Poster for MICA’s Screening of Objectified (in progress)

I am creating a poster for MICA‘s screening of Gary Hustwit’s latest documentary, Objectified. In order to do this, I tracked pretty much every object I touched throughout the course of a day and then proceeded to illustrate each one. I wanted to allude to Build‘s poster for the film, but take the basic idea a bit further and put a concept behind it. I will post the final and printed version in my portfolio.
